  8. [S359] Unknown author, 'Monday - Before Mr. J. P. Gubbins', "Alleged robbery by an assistant. - Frederick PICKWICK, a well-dressed young man, an assistant to Mr Franklin, tailor, No. 2, Upper Parade, was charged with stealing three coats and a piece of cloth, value of £3 10s. belonging to his master. - Mr Franklin stated that the prisoner had been in his employ for three or four months as salesman. The two coats, mackintosh, and piece of Scotch tweed were his property. - Mr Richard LANGLEN, assistant to Mr GRAINGER, pawnbroker, Oxford, produced two letters of the prisoner's dated November 5th and 24th, offering in pledge the goods in question, which were sent to Oxford in two parcels, 16s. 6d. being advanced on one parcel, and 18s. 6d. on the other. One of these sums was sent to "H JACKSON, jun., 95, Upper Parade - Leamington." The other was sent to 2, Upper Parade. - Mr Superintendent LUND, stated that on the previous evening he saw the prisoner at Mr FRANKLIN'S; arrested him on a charge of stelaing the above mentioned articles; and told him that he must search him. The prisoner then took out of his pocket two pawnbroker's pledges, and said "It is quite true; I cannot tell what made me do it; but I am guilty. I am so sorry for Mr FRANKLIN'S kindness towards me." He told him he had two letters of his. The prisoner then said, "I called at Mr MILES', 95 Regent-street, and asked him if he would be kind enough to take any letters for me. Mr BOULTBEE asked Mr LUND if he knew anything of him. - Mr Superintendent LUND said that the prisoner was discharged from his late employer at Oxford for a similar offence. - Mr FRANKLIN said Mr CARTER, the prisoner's previous employer, dismissed him for a petty theft but he (Mr FRANKLIN) engaged him on the assurance of his being resolved to amend, but with the understanding that if he again committed himself he must expect no consideration. - The prisoner appeared in the dock in a state of great contrition. He pleaded guilty, and was remanded till the following day, when he was sentenced to six months' imprisonment with hard labour."
