So many times have lorries and cars knocked down the memorial which the late Mr. Cecil Sainsbury erected to his wife, on the green near the Crown Inn, Bathford, that Bathford Parish Council have moved it into the playing field - an appropriate position in view of Mr Sainsbury's deep interest in sport."

Death After Long-Life Devotion To Sport

Late Mr Cecil Sainsbury. of Bathampton

We regret to record the death which took place on Saturday evening of Mr Cecil Sainsbury, of Glebe Cottage, Bathampton, till recently managing director of Messers Stothert and Pitt, Ltd., Bath.

Mr Cecil Sainsbury was one of the best known men in Bath, although he took little active interest in public affairs. He will be remembered, however, for his life long devotion to sport, especially for the great interest he took in the promotion of boxing in the neighbourhood. There was hardly a boxing contest of any note in Bath or Bristol which he did not attend, and was one of the shrewdest judges. ...

He had been with the engineering firm all his life and during the war his was a great resposibilty, for the firm became engaged in the making of munitions, and Mr Sainsbury took a prominent part in the proceedings when the King and Queen visited the works during war time.

His wife died several years ago, not long after her marriage, and this was a great shock to Mr Sainsbury."
